Job Location: Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
This position is responsible to ensure that merchandise meets all Walmart compliance and safety standards. Responsible to design and integrate effective compliance programs and controls into product development (design and technical standards) and sourcing initiatives (including factory certification and third party product testing and inspections), reducing risk of harm to customers, complaints and other customer returns and supporting continuous improvement in product quality and performance.
Serves as a key strategic resource to the merchandising, product development and sourcing teams.
Designs and ensures the integration within the business of product compliance and safety initiatives, including standards, process/control points, and performance reporting.
Initiates, develops and approves safety, compliance and performance technical specifications and standards for products, including for use by third party verification laboratories. Provide direction and advice to Walmart merchants and sourcing, and directives to suppliers, on technical specifications, and the interpretation and application of safety and compliance protocols.
Participate in merchandising strategy sessions and pre-buy trip meetings to advise on compliance and safety requirements and performance. Develops and issues guidelines for merchants and suppliers in order to ensure product safety and compliance expectations are met, and supporting quality initiatives. Partners with sourcing team to ensure testing requirements and safeguard are being implemented.
Develops and participates in ongoing training and education for buyers and suppliers on testing programs and product safety and compliance requirements.
Conducts risk assessments of products, including safety or compliance related testing, and implements new processes and procedures to ensure verification programs are effective and efficient. Collaborates with product analytics team, to ensure regular and transparent reporting and communication on supplier and item level performance and potential areas of improvement in specifications, processes or controls.
Identifies, qualifies and audits performance of third party testing and verification service providers. Maintains oversight and direction of third party providers, ensuring adherence to Walmart expectations.
Monitors emerging compliance requirements and trends, including regulatory and legislative developments, and develops strategies to respond to compliance risks. Collaborates with product specialist to ensure regular and transparent reporting of legislative developments.
Articulates corporate positions on compliance matters to regulators and external agencies.
Develops external relationships and alliances strengthening the company’s reputation within compliance community and leads regulatory outreach meetings, ensuring that the company’s compliance programs, policies, procedures and reports are communicated in a persuasive, accurate and understandable way and that sensitive data is protected.
Minimum Bachelor Degree required
Minimum 8 + years of Experience Required
Detailed understanding of Canadian legislation within scope of responsibility.
Detailed understanding of sourcing, testing programs and product specifications.
Must have strong analytical skill and be able to make independent decisions.
Ability to communicate extensively with internal and external customers.
Must be a self-motivated, self directed team player.
Substantial attention to detail is necessary.
Must be willing and have the ability to travel (domestic and international).
Working knowledge with MS Word and Excel.
Detailed understanding of Canadian product safety regulations. Detailed knowledge and experience in he development of testing protocols for use by third party testing companies and laboratory test methodology and testing.
